STRONGER Together-Lyndsey Miller

“Trainings and events with people who identify as LGBTQ+, will better assist firms and the legal industry as conversations and bonds grow between the people of the community and those who represent the law firm.”

- Lyndsey Miller, Paralegal, Cleveland, OH

We asked Lyndsey: What do you believe is the formula for addressing LGBTQ+ issues within the legal industry while maintaining a solid, inclusive community that brings all of us together?

I’m not sure there is a set formula, or guide that will assist with addressing LGBTQ+ issues within the legal industry, but there are definitely steps and directions we can take to better serve this community as a whole. One of the first things the legal industry should do is show the community at large they represent and support the LGBTQ+ community. A potential way of doing this would be to present a small pin or decal in the receptionist areas that shows the law firm represents and supports LGBTQ+ issues and all underrepresented groups.

Representation and education are the best ways to ensure the legal industry can address LGBTQ+ issues while maintaining a solid inclusive community. Law firms should engage staff and attorneys organize LGBTQ+ inclusivity trainings. The best way to ensure a community is being represented, included, and understood is to educate oneself about that community. Trainings and events with people who identify as LGBTQ+, will better assist firms and the legal industry as conversations and bonds grow between the people of the community and those who represent the law firm.
