Brian O’Shaughnessy, an IP partner based in the Firm’s Washington D.C. office, has been named the 2023 recipient of The Paul Michel Award.

The award from IPWatchDog is named after Chief Judge Paul Michel (CAFC, ret.), and is awarded to someone in the IP community who has “selflessly served the best interests of the industry and its members as a respected leader, mentor, and advocate on behalf of fairness and for the best interests of the intellectual property system.”

When naming Brian as this year’s honoree, the committee says he “is uniquely deserving of this award, having served LES USA-Canada for two decades in various roles, as President, on the Board of Trustees, and since 2018 as Senior Vice-President for Public Policy. Brian has spent significant time and energy proselytizing for stronger patent rights and fairer licensing and tech transfer, testifying numerous times on the Hill, writing op-eds, and traveling around the country.”

Brian joined Dinsmore in February of 2017, and has more than 30 years of experience before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in structuring global IP portfolios and strategies. He has been acknowledged by IAM magazine as among its “IAM Strategy 300”, the world’s leading IP strategists, and among “The World's Leading Patent and Technology Licensing Lawyers.”

He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Department of Chemistry at Rochester Institute of Technology, and his J.D. from Syracuse University, College of Law in 1986.
